May 1 Jason Carter

Jason Carter spoke at the East Cobb Democratic Alliance “At Issue Forum”.

He is the co-founder of Democrats Work (DW). He has had an active role in many aspects of politics and service. He worked as a field organizer for the Harvey Gantt for Senate campaign in 1996, helped found the Red Clay Democrats (an organization of democratic young professionals in Atlanta) and served on the Georgia Democrats State Committee. He is the author of “Power lines: Two Years on South Africa’s Borders,” a book about his Peace corps service in South Africa (1998 to 2001), which was published by National Geographic’s books.  Among other writings is an article about Christian faith and political life that will be published in the Georgia Law Review this fall.

The mission of DW is to mobilize grassroots democrats to perform community service projects…as Democrats.  To achieve this mission, DW partners with Democratic and progressive organizations-including local clubs, state and county parties, and local chapters of national organizations, campaigns and elected officials-to get their members and supporters to volunteer for local service projects as part of a Democrat-branded “Work Crew.” DW provides the tools to help Democrats organize successful service events in their communities and the logistical support to increase the visibility of those efforts. All DW activities advance four main goals”

*Make tangible contributions to increase the visibility of Democrats at the local level.

*Engage the grassroots during non-election time to keep folks active and involved.

*Reach out to people who might not otherwise get involved in purely “political” activities, but share our values.

*Build a unified stable of motivated and easily mobilized volunteers who can help candidates win elections.

Another great East Cobb Democratic Alliance Forum. Now, if you are thinking about a visibility/community support activity, you don’t have to re-invent the wheel. The DW folks are ready to help organize and plan – you get a great t-shirt too.

May 5 The Jefferson Jackson Dinner of Cobb County

The major fundraiser and opportunity to dress-up and have fun for the Cobb Democratic Party was a great success.  Who was that young lady with the small backup band? Don Wilson said that he knew a professional singer who was extraordinary and he was right.

Over 130 Democrats gathered and gave special recognition to Herb Butler who received a lifetime achievement award. Herb has been a Democrat, a union man, and a happy husband for 62 years. State Representative Rob Teilhet was named the Democrat of the Year.

Governor Roy Barnes gave a memorial tribute to Juanelle Edwards. He could have quoted her witty and biting one-liners all night, “If you took all 3 of Guy Milner’s wives and stacked them on each others shoulders, they wouldn’t stand as tall as Max Cleveland.”

Congressman David Scott from South Cobb and a lot of other places that the republicans redistricted was the featured speaker.

I even got to say a few words in praise of envelope stuffers, phone bankers, visibility event volunteers, and door-knockers. I forgot to mention event organizers, car parkers, chair movers and table setters. Some great canvassers were mentioned, Cherry Spencer Stark for umpteen reasons but the only one mentioned was how she made canvassing fun (canvass 2 hours – have lunch for 2 hours). There are many more ways to be productive and have fun and Cherry got a lot of people thinking about doing both in their own way.

Beth Farokhi (canvasser 1st class) was praised for elevating the level of productivity of simple door knocking. It was also a lot of fun.

I didn’t mention Beverly McMurray’s contributions because I’m disorganized as a public speaker. I’ll ask her forgiveness the next time I see her.

Yes, I got to canvass with Beverly once (the CDW were helping RuthE Levy’s campaign last year).  That was a good day.

May 6 He’s not the dictator, the king, big cheese

Famous Smyrna Democrat and well known float builder, Hugh Kinard struck a note for reason and logic while criticizing Bush and his advisers in the AJC Letters section (C5).

May 8 Cobb County Democratic Meetup

District Captain Will Fowlkes dazzled the meetup group at the Rib Ranch on Canton Hwy showing what advanced technology tied to political purposes can provide.

Want to canvass? See Will first for the who and the where of canvassing.

I can show you how to knock and smile but Will has the rest of it mastered.

What do teachers and students need and how do they get it?

Ask a politician?

Better yet ask a teacher, and Merry gave the insight of a lifetime of excellence in education.

I couldn’t add to the high quality of conversation, so mostly I listened.

It was great.

Hillary

There is a Senator Hillary Clinton meetup/meeting in about a week.

I’ll check her campaign website, sign-up and take a look. There may be folks there who have never seen a Cobb County Democrat or know about the CCDC, CDW, or the YD’s.

I’ll take some cards and whatever literature I can find.

There may be some familiar faces there.

Barack

Next stop is his web page.

If his supporters meet, there should be Cobb Democrats there too.

May 12 Vernon Jones

The CCDC breakfast will have as its main speaker Vernon Jones, DeKalb County Commission Chairman, Our next Senator? This could be very interesting. Arrive early for a good seat.

For directions/schedule check the calendar of the Cobb County Democratic meetup   http://democrat.meetup.com/909/calendar
