Sometimes important events don’t feel important the moment
they happen. A few Saturday’s ago the Cobb County Democratic Committee elected
representatives to the state Democratic party at the East Cobb Library on Lower
Roswell Road, which is a very short walk from Beth Farokhi’s house.
There are 17 senate
and state house representatives in Cobb County, so we get to elect 17 people to
represent us.
I don’t know if Republicans know what diversity is but it is
part of the foundation of the Democratic Party.
Geographical
diversity – 4 people from each county commissioner’s district are elected.
A resolution was offered and passed that the current head of
the CCDC will be a representative too.
Gender diversity
– the highest vote getter of each gender from a county commissioner’s district
is automatically elected.
Our representatives are from commission districts
#1 Carol Stephens, John Dooley, Betty Godwin, and Don Wilson
#2 Linda Collins Beth Farokhi, Patrick Stafford, and Benson
Manica
#3 Herb Butler, Melissa Pike, Darryl Wilson, and RuthE Levy
#4 Penny Wilkerson, Joel Cope, Gerald Johnson (looks like I
missed someone)
And head of the CCDC, David Wilkerson
Since we now have a truly democratically elected leadership
of the state and county Democratic parties (which means the big money wasn’t
invited), the thing will need some money to pay the rent and whatever else they
do. Guess I’ll join, just so I have the right to complain (if necessary) at a
later date.
Rep. Terry Johnson,
the operation on his foot was successful and he will be ship-shape in a few
more weeks.
District Captains
meeting – that was last week and will continue to be the 4th
Tuesday of the month. When people say what can we do and how can we do it, this
is it. Grassroots organization is the train that will take us to our
destination. The journey starts now and
it will never stop. District captains for now and precinct captains later will
get us there. District captains have a
list of CCDC members in their district and will start calling to say hello,
confirm contact information, and see what they can learn from their Democratic
neighbors. If you haven’t gotten a call, don’t be upset. I haven’t made any
calls yet but will get going next week. If no one has called you, call your
district captain and say hello. Most of the pictures are on the meetup web page
http://democrat.meetup.com/909/photos/
. Their contact info should be on the CCDC web page soon or just send me an
e-mail, and I’ll get you connected. No hurry, I’d wait another couple weeks
before you start e-mailing.
Cherokee County
Democrats – They met at the Serene Bean in downtown Woodstock Saturday
morning. 22 Democrats listened to the same type of discussons that Cobb
Democrats have: membership drives, purging membership rolls, canvassing,
outreach, and more.
SOS means support
our soldiers. It is a combination outrach, visibility, and soldier support
program. Cherokee Democrats have been setting up tables outside (was it K-mart or
Walmart?) stores and would ask shoppers to get certain items that would then be
shipped to soldiers in Iraq. Democrats being visible in Cherokee County, doing
good work, this is an example to us all.
The purge of Republicans masquariding as Democrats continues.
In Cherokee County, an officer of the party (he was a candidate in the last
election) announced that he will become a Republican. His final gift to the
party was to invite a “property rights” advocate to speek at the breakfast.
Nate Cochran talked about property right in Cherokee County answered some
questions and left. Then I got a lesson in what he really meant and who it
would really affect.
Gary Gains, lead the group (I met him at a meetup – a master
of visibility events) and Judy Hamilton provided many of the best questions.
Vince Exley (famous Democrat) was there and it was good to say hello again.
A member of the group asked if I knew Jeff Selman in hushed
tones that reflect that he is more than famous but not quite a superstar. From
now on, I guess I’ll have to address him as Mister Selman.
