Breakfast - The 2nd
Saturday of the month Cobb Democratic breakfast was better than expected on
many levels. For years, Betty Gray was the only Democratic Cobb County school
board member. The recent history of the school board is about evolution
stickers and unneeded laptops.
She stated her concern for children and our community and
anger for the rest of the school board that they could not do a better job with
our public schools.
I did not know that Betty was that strong, outspoken, and
passionate about public schools. Go Betty.
One teacher in the auduence said that Mableton Elementary
has 450 students, 12 trailers, and 2 bathrooms and that don’t work all the
time, this in one of the most affluent counties in America. That teacher
volunteered to resign and run for school board against the Republican incumbent
Teresa Plenge. That school board district voted Democratic but Plenge won with
54% of the vote in 2004.
District Captains
in Betty Gray’s area don’t have to wonder about how to focus their efforts in 2007,
all they have to do is think about public education, public education, public
education.
Pictures of the
breakfast are at Allan Levene Photography allan@allanlevenephotography.com
. I’m so glad a professional photographer was at the breakfast. I was going to take some pictures but I
couldn’t figure out how to operate my daughter’s camera. I copied many of
Allan’s pictures and added them to the “Photo” http://democrat.meetup.com/909/photos/ section of the Cobb County Democrats
meetup web page. I added names to most pictures.
Directions - Go to the Cobb Dems, East Cobb Dems, or the meetup
“Calendar” http://democrat.meetup.com/909/calendar/
for the address and phone number of Los Bravos. I gave directions to a friend
who was in transit and almost directed her into Paulding County.
Dinner at the Diner –
The 2nd Monday of the
month means Women Democrats get together at The Marietta Diner. Arvilla, Jody,
Melissa, and Pat had a wonderful time and I got to listen and take some
pictures (my daughter showed me what I was doing wrong) for the meetup
website. It was fun. Everyone had
interesting family stories, amazing pet stories, and politics was mentioned
once or twice. My cheesecake was as big as a Buick and the coffee was good too.
Meetup – 2nd
Tuesday of the month. Like the Dinner at the Diner, the Cobb County Democrats
meetup is an opportunity for Democrats to get to know other Democrats and share
information in a way that you can’t do at a breakfast. This night I shared a
little but learned a lot more. Merry talked about public education from the
perspective of a teacher. Will shared his impressive knowledge and experience
of politics. There is a vacant District Captain position in his area and Will
may fill the position. Will is from Arkansas, You’ll have to ask him yourself
what campaigns he has worked on.
WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER
is the message from Cobbforpeace.org. I had forgotten that they are there every
Friday at noon on Marietta Square. Michael Manely of the East Cobb Democratic
Alliance stopped to talk to some of the regular Visibility Event participants
(wavers) as I was trying to find a parking place. I stopped and waved for a
while. It was fun. Make eye contact, wave at a person, smile real big, and a
lot of people will wave and smile back and honk their horns too. I got some
pictures for the meetup webpage and was walking away when another person walked
up to the wavers and smiled and talked for a while, probably waved too.
A discouraging word
– Republicans realized a long time ago that division is not a luxury that a
minority party can afford. Ronald Regan created a 11th commandment
“Republicans Shall not Criticize other Republicans.”
Last summer, I was flipping channels and saw what looked
like a town hall meeting on C-Span. There were some really agitated folks who
were yelling, interrupting, criticizing, and generally acting like they had red
pepper in their pants.
Was it a Republican actually meeting with his constitutents
or a veterans group and getting a dose of reality?
Nope, it was Nancy Pelosi in her safe liberal Democratic
district.
I met a Democrat, for the first time Friday, at a non-CCDC
visibility event who had a long history of political activism before he came to
Cobb County. He criticized a specific Cobb Democratic candidate (GW Hall) for
not listing his party affiliation on his signs and literature. I mentioned that
most Republicans don’t mention their party either. It didn’t matter. He wanted
a “PERFECT” Democrat or none at all.
GW even knocked on this guy’s door. I asked him if he knew who was GW’s
opponent – (Bobby Franklin - the worst Republican in Georgia) and he didn’t
know. I gave him a little info about Bobby Franklin (Dr. No) and all he wanted
to do was criticize Democrats.
Karl Rove is proud that he has brought together different
Republicans groups, with little in common, (Christian Coalition, Wall Street,
The NRA,) and formed a coalition that does not require everyone to think the
same way, just to pull the wagon in the same direction – together.
I’d rather be in a room full of arguing Democrats than any
other place but sometimes (once a year) I think, “What would it be like in a “PERFECT” Democratic world.
Now that I have that out of my system, Democrats are being
elected this morning to represent Cobb County in the Georgia Democratic Party
and I wouldn’t miss it.
