DEAR EDITOR: Ron Goodden, in his Wednesday letter to the editor, insists that Saddam Hussein "deserved" his sentence. Now, I am opposed to all forms of capital punishment, but I suppose the world demanded the death of Saddam. And so it had to occur.

But why put him to death? Yes, he deserved it. No doubt in my mind, or Mr. Goodden's, or anybody else's. But does that justify our executing him? Are we not then just like him, or do we instead believe in mercy? Yes, Saddam showed no mercy to his enemies. Does that mean that we, who hold ourselves to a higher moral standard, need also show no mercy? Do two wrongs make a right? Doesn't the Bible quote God as saying, "Vengeance is mine?"
