Last Tuesday there was another successful meetup. Charlene, a first time visitor, learned what was happening with Democrats in Cobb County from a pair of experts. David Lombrozo, the head of the East Cobb Democratic Alliance, was able to share information with Charlene about the Cobb County Democratic Committee, the Cobb Democratic Women, and the Young Democrats. Celeste Hyre from Georgia for Democracy was full of information about that organization. Since I used to live near Charlene, I was able to tell her about some of her neighbors (mostly Democrats) and local elected officials.
Charlene's a nurse who was able to tell the rest of us about hospice and nursing home issues.Mark is a longtime meetup member who has been on the road for a long time and it was great to see him again.
A meetup is two hours of a small group informing as well as listening to its members, getting to know each other as well as sharing information about local Democratic groups, projects, and issues.
The Saturday Cobb County Democratic Committee breakfast (see Calender) was a time for old friends to say hello before and after the breakfast. During the breakfast, four candidates for the office of state party chair made five minute speeches. They all stressed grass roots organizing. Local events and projects were announced by the head of the CCDC, David Wilkerson.
The breakfast was a wonderful event but if you wish to meet Democrats and get to know them individually and the background of local, state, and national politics, that is something that a meetup does quite well.
The breakfast had about 100 people and a good sound system was needed to make the speakers heard in the back of the room. We don't need microphones at a meetup and we know everyone?s name when it is over.
