Sonny Perdue and his Republican crew have made no secret of the fact that they need major support from Cobb County to ensure his re-election. After all, he got 10 percent of his total votes from our county four years ago.

Maybe he wouldn’t be so worried about getting Republican votes out in Cobb if he hadn’t cost our county's school children so much since he took office. Despite all his rhetoric about character and family, his actions haven't come close to matching his tall words when it comes to educating Cobb County's children.

According to the Georgia Department of Education Earnings sheets, Sonny P. cut state support for Cobb County schools by more than $9 million in his adjusted fiscal year budget for 2003.  That adds up to a cut of almost $90 per child in Cobb County Schools.

Then it got even worse. He cut state support to our county's schools by:

  • $ 186.52 per Cobb County child in 2004.

  • $ 219.19 per Cobb County child in 2005.

  • $ 216.67 per Cobb County child in 2006.

And his 2007 budget cuts another $ 105.51 per Cobb County child.

All that adds up to cutting total education funding by $817.17 per Cobb County child since Perdue took office.

Of course, compared to what he did to Marietta School District funding, the students in Cobb County schools got off light. Sonny P. cut funds to the Marietta School District by:

  • $ 97.77 per Marietta child in his amended 2003 budget.

  • $ 201.73 per Marietta child in 2004.

  • $ 236.72 per Marietta child in 2005.

  • $ 238.06 per Marietta child in 2006.

  • $114.38 per Marietta child in 2007.

That adds up to total cuts per Marietta child of $888.67 since Perdue took office.

Personally, I think the children of Marietta and Cobb County deserve a whole lot better.
