Mike Holzknecht -- George W. Lankford was a Good man and a Good citizen. Sadly, he died recently.

He was the first Republican Cobb County Commissioner and served 14 years in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was a strong supporter of education, voter registration, recreation facilities, and the environment.

George W. Lankford was a Republican back when the leadership of both political parties reflected their moderate majorities. He fought to increase the voter registration locations from 1 to 13 and the number of parks from 2 to 21.

If George W. Lankford ran (today) for any elected office in Cobb County or any county in Georgia, he could not win the primary. The Georgia Republican party has no room for moderation or progress.

I’m not suggesting that George W. Lankford would be a Democrat today. It’s easier to change the direction of a political party than the voting habits of its members.
