Progressives - be they Democrats,
Republicans, or independents, must now take action to bring back
sanity, responsibility, strength, and compassion to
government. Rarely, if ever, in the history of our country,
has an administration demonstrated such weakness and incompetence
in governance as demonstrated this past week in New Orleans.
Enough is enough!
Under Bush's weak leadership, we
experienced:
-
The most costly direct foreign
attack on this country in its history.
-
Record deficit spending,
throwing our country into a black hole of debt our
great-grandchildren and their children will have to pay off.
-
The exportation of jobs
overseas, poverty, joblessness.
-
A hopeless war of aggression
against a country that was of no immediate threat while
allowing the perpetrators of 9/11 escape. Just where is
bin Laden today?
-
Loss of support by our closest
allies.
-
The utter depravity of the
abuses of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, further endangering our
troops.
-
The rape of the environment by
corporate polluters.
-
The utter failure of a timely
response to the tragedy in New Orleans.
How long must we wait before we
take action? We can no longer stand by and allow this
President and his rubber-stamp Republican Congress to further
weaken our nation. The President can't run for re-election
in 2008. But our entire House of Representatives and
one-third of the members of the Senate are up for re-election in
2006. We must do everything possible to remove these
weaklings and incompetents from power. We must speak
out. We must write letters to the media and to our
representatives. We must find and support progressive
responsible candidates for Congress, both in the 6th and 11th
Congressional Districts. We must also support progressive
responsible congressmen and senators not only throughout Georgia,
but across the country as well.
Here in the Georgia's 6th District,
arguably the most Republican District in the nation, we must take
immediate action. I met with 6th Dist. Cong. Tom Price at a
meeting of the East Cobb Civic Association last Wednesday (August
31) and found him as weak and ineffective as we all had
feared. Instead of rallying support for the victims of
hurricane Katrina, he talked about gasoline prices and his support
of the Boortz/Linder tax-loophole scam for the rich. Instead
of talking about the current obscene war in Iraq, the lack of
troop armor and supplies, the hopelessness of democratizing a
tribal society at war with itself for more than one-thousand
years, he bragged about how much pork he brought to Georgia.
Those members of the East Cobb
Democratic Alliance that were there vigorously challenged him on
his Boortz/Linder tax scam. He mumbled something about this
requiring a lot of further discussion. He then bolted out of
the meeting, right after his presentation, with his pork-defending
Cobb Commission Chairman, Sam Olens, close behind.
Marching in parades, attending
Democratic breakfasts, and manning booths are important, but not
sufficient. This will take personal sacrifice - money, time,
and sweat equity. This means speaking out for our principles
at any time and at any place.
Now is the time for all true
Americans to come to aid of their country.
