In its clumsy attempt to smear Ambassador Joseph Wilson, the administration outed its own covert CIA agent, Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame Wilson.  Contrary to the assertions of the Republican Party and right-wing pundits, Mrs. Wilson was not just a "desk-jockey" employee of the CIA.  She was not only a secret intelligence operative.  She was a non-official-cover (NOC) secret intelligence operative.  One who, if her cover were blown, could be summarily executed if caught by our enemies.  As a NOC, she did not possess a diplomatic passport, so her life depended on her maintaining her secret status.  Fortunately for her, but not our country, she was stationed in D.C. when Karl Rove and company revealed her identity.  So all she lost was her ability to continue her highly dangerous work in tracking WMD proliferation using covert sources.

However, in contrast to what one sees in James Bond movies, the impact was far greater than simply her losing her ability to act as a NOC agent.  Her entire operation was rendered inoperative.  Her cover company, Brewster, Jennings & Associates, and any of its known employees and associates were rendered useless.  They were working on protecting us from weapons of mass destruction.  Mrs. Wilson's outing was a traitorous act.  One that risked our safety; our very lives.  Every person that was ever known to have associated with Valerie Plame, throughout her career travels, was, and still is, at risk of losing his/her life.  In fact, I would not be surprised if when the Special Prosecutor makes his report, he does not reveal that agents were killed as a direct result of this  unconscionable Rove/Libby/administration leak.

So why did Rove, et. al., out Mrs. Wilson?  To exact revenge on her husband, a career diplomat who blew the whistle on their fraudulent case for the war in Iraq?  If so, why?  At the time of her outing, the case for the Iraq/Uranium connection was known and admitted to be false.  In fact, not only was there no connection to a Uranium Yellow-Cake purchase from Niger, but absolutely no WMD's, or nuclear program were found by troops on the ground.

It was revenge, pure and simple.  Revenge that may have very well caused the deaths of CIA operatives and their sources living outside the U.S.  Revenge that rendered inoperative a major program on controlling WMD's and nuclear proliferation throughout the world.

But the campaign to smear Ambassador Wilson continues even today.  The Republican Party Chairman and the Republican Noise Machine are now claiming that Joseph Wilson lied about who sent him to Niger (he did not.)  The machine is claiming that his wife was not a secret agent (she was), and that she used her position to appoint her husband (she did not).  Why are they doing this?  In my opinion, to mask the fact that they risked the lives of real American patriots in the name of political expediency.

In my book, treason is not a family value.
