Our country is under attack!
Every day, more soldiers and Iraqi innocents are dying in a war
based on the lies and deceits of our own administration. The
Downing Street Memos now show clearly that George Bush and his
neo-conmen were fixing the evidence to justify a war with Iraq,
leaving our real enemies in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Saudi
Arabia go free. Osama bin Laden is still a free man and his
9/11 perpetrators and the Taliban are still murdering innocents
nearly four years later.
Our civil liberties are under
attack by right-wing ideologues who consider our long-cherished
liberties useless historical artifacts in their quest for global
hegemony and the conversion of our country from a democratic
republic to a corporate-run theocracy. To them, the
torturing going on in Guantanamo,
Abu
Ghraib, and elsewhere is justified and the Geneva Convention
is considered a quaint historical document.
The administration pushes for a
renewal of the most egregious portions of the USA Patriot
Act. An act which has had little effect in catching
terrorists but which has been used to illegally detain American
Citizens and others without due process. As shown in the
film, "Unconstitutional
- The War on Our Civil Liberties," the word
"detain" does not mean merely making one late for an
appointment. It means illegally imprisoning and torturing
not only suspected foreign Taliban, but also American Citizens and
others, who have done little more than having immigrated from an Arabic
country or related to someone who has. It also means having
your personal information, reading habits, and record of purchases
made available to any government agency without your knowing
it. It means government agents can break into your home
while you are away, and without your knowledge with a "sneak
and peek" warrant.
Now we learn that the chief
political spokesman for this administration, Karl
Rove, may be under grand jury investigation for releasing the
identity of a CIA secret agent, Valerie Plame, as a political vendetta
against her husband for his showing the so-called Niger purchase
of Uranium Yellow-Cake was a fraud. We learn now that Rove
may have been in a conspiracy with others high in the
administration to exact revenge by endangering a secret agent and
her sources.
Finally, the day many of us have
feared. President Bush is readying his nomination of a
Supreme Court Justice who may be instrumental in reversing most of
the civil liberties decisions we have come to enjoy.
Remarkably, right-wing Christian fundamentalists are fighting
against Bush's selection of his long-time friend and justifier of
torture, Alberto Gonzales. Why? Because Gonzales is
not right-wing enough for their taste. So the corporate
media are now trying to sell the idea that Democrats should be grateful
if Bush nominates the torturer Gonzales as the next Supreme Court
Justice.
What can we do to save our republic
from these neo-conmen and traitors? Let
the President, our Senators and Congressmen know you are
"mad as hell and you're not going to take it
anymore." Write
to the corporate media and tell them to start doing their job
or you will stop purchasing from their advertisers. Work
with your fellow Democrats to elect a Democratic Congress in
2006. Rally, hold house parties, sign petitions, march, let
the truth be told. Get active in organizations such as Democracy
for America, MoveOn,
People for the
American Way. Contribute to the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee, The
Cobb Democratic Committee, buy a DNC
Bond. Our future depends on it. The future of our
Republic depends on it!
