The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday March 27 printed my letter commenting on an article in the March 20 edition about how many Christians have come to the discomfiting conclusion that Jesus' true message is being distorted by those who seem to believe that Jesus preached only the message that right wing fanatics want to hear, like opposition to abortion, gay marriages, and the teaching of evolution. As you know, this is a persistent theme of mine, and one I believe that we should emphasize. The Republican claim of occupying a moral high ground has now been exposed to years of their establishing a public record, and that record shows what a smoke screen of self-righteous hypocrisy it really is.

What is even more heartening is the fact that several other letters also slammed the Republicans on the hypocrisy issue. One was in response to the same article I was commenting on. But even better, two other letters echoed my themes of how Republicans have shown their hypocrisy by loudly proclaiming their Christian virtues—while cutting Medicaid and condoning the corruption of Tom DeLay. And those letters raised those themes in the context of the Terri Schiavo case—which I'm sure we all agree ranks today as the quintessential example of Republican hypocrisy. To put the cherry on the cake, one of those letters was written by a Presbyterian minister! And the polls show that Americans believe that the Republicans this time overreached themselves. An overwhelming majority believes Congress had no business intervening in the Schiavo case.

Nailing the coonskin to the wall is a letter on how GA's super-patriotic Republicans in the US Congress voted against a bill to help servicemen leaving active duty service.

Day by day, the props are beginning to come out from under the Republican "moral" house of cards. Let's do all we can to keep the hammer blows falling on that house of cards.
