The HOPE Scholarship has been the most successful program in Georgia history. Democrats proposed it; Democrats expanded it; Democrats protected it. And with good reason – according to the Georgia Student Finance Commission, more than $2.3 billion has been awarded to more than 800,000 students attending Georgia’s colleges, universities, and technical colleges since the HOPE Scholarship started in 1993. Under Democratic leadership, the HOPE Scholarship has helped Georgia scholars succeed. 

Sadly, Gov. Sonny Perdue doesn’t seem to understand the success of the HOPE Scholarship. Even though he opposed the HOPE Scholarship when it was started, when he ran for Governor, he told the people of Georgia that he would protect it. Now that he’s in office, Perdue and his allies in the Legislature have repeatedly tried to slash HOPE benefits. What’s worse is that they’ve told the people of Georgia they have to make the cuts, even while they raid HOPE to fund a website that includes a video of the Governor. Perdue is using HOPE money for this while he spends tax dollars on projects like a million dollar-plus redecoration of the Governor’s Mansion.

That’s why the Democratic Party of Georgia has created a new website, www.HopelessPerdue.com – as well as an ad to appear on websites across Georgia. We have to let the people of Georgia know what Perdue and his allies at the Capitol are up to. At www.HopelessPerdue.com, you can see the ad and forward it to your friends. And unlike the Governor’s website, we aren’t raiding state education funds to create it and get it out. We need your help to keep the website up and the Internet ad on websites like the AJC.com’s “Political Insider” page. Perdue’s assault on the HOPE Scholarship is part of a national Republican pattern of misleading attacks on programs and policies that help regular people get ahead. It’s not a coincidence that Georgia Republicans are leading an assault based on lies against HOPE while Republicans in Washington launch misleading attacks against Social Security.
